![]() For all its knowledge and procedures, medicine is an imperfect science, characterised by changing knowledge, incomplete information and fallible individuals. Gawande describes medicine as a messy field. In this post, we’ll review some of the messages that I took from Gawande’s work. ![]() It contains a myriad of lessons, not only for those in healthcare, but for those in business as well. Complications is both an insightful and educational book. This includes Gawande’s reflections on the challenges and choices we face when making decisions under uncertainty. ![]() The book provides insight into the fallibilities, mysteries and uncertainties of medicine. Surgeon Atul Gawande (and now CEO of Haven Healthcare) compiled a collection of essays, written during his general residency, in his book Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science. ![]()

![]() Sly, immersive, and wildly original, SURVIVE THE NIGHT is Riley Sager’s best book yet. Add in a jaw-dropping, earth-shattering final reveal in the book’s last few pages and you’ve got yourself a surefire winner in SURVIVE THE NIGHT. SURVIVE THE NIGHT has all the key ingredients readers expect from a Sager suspense novel: an endearing, independent protagonist, a horror-movie-worthy premise, and a masterful command of plot and pacing that will keep readers glued to the pages. The Verdict: My new favorite Sager book! A summer 2021 must-read. ![]() ![]() ![]() Conceptually distinct from Appropriation Art, Brown’s artistic process demonstrates where his focus essentially lies not in the base image per se, but rather in the possibilities which derive from it. Starting with published or downloaded versions of his sources, he manipulates the imagery digitally before beginning to paint on panel, further transforming them into works of an unparalleled uncanniness, where colours and forms undergo further re-assessment. The sources for Brown’s practice are found in the works of Old Masters, Surrealists or artists such as Karel Appel, Frank Auerbach or Georg Baselitz, as well as sci-fi painters like Chris Foss. Transcending time and pictorial conventions, Brown’s work disarms common distinctions between beauty and abjection, heightening the emotive tension present within. At the core of his practice is the blending of artistic periods and stylistic genres. One of Britain’s most revered contemporary artists, Glenn Brown works across painting, drawing and sculpture, taking as his source material reproduced imagery from art history and popular culture. ![]() ![]() ![]() (Note, Wyoming was either the first state or one of the first states to grant women the right to vote, so this was a pretty cool easter egg for those who know). But in a big upset, he votes for Grace! Yay, a white boy makes a good decision. It comes to the student representing Wyoming to decide whether Grace or the boy wins. Despite all her hard work while white boy has done almost nothing, he's winning by a small amount. He notices that if all the boys vote for him, he'll have enough electoral college votes to win, so why work very hard on winning the election, when he can be doing other stuff? Meanwhile, the white boy does a little campaigning, and then does his normal stuff. She works extra hard on her campaign, and does lots of volunteering so everyone sees she truly cares. ![]() So Grace is running against this white boy-the exact type of candidate every president ever has been. Because these teachers just don't get it, apparently. But who should she run up against? A white boy is chosen. Instead, her teacher decides that this is a great learning opportunity, and she'll set up a mock election with another class. The class laughs at her, but her teacher doesn't. In class Grace notices all the presidents are men, so she decides she wants to be president when she grows up. This is an infuriating little picture book, and let me tell you why I'm saying that instead of 'cute,' like all the other reviews. ![]() ![]() ![]() Lund here masterfully weaves together historical reality and high-powered fiction. Did he really see the Father and the Son in a pillar of light? Has he truly been visited by angelic messengers? What is all this talk about gold plates and new scripture? And so, finally, with a wonder of his own, he said, "Yes, Joseph, I believe you." He knew without the least shadow of doubt that everything Joseph was telling him was true. The second event in August 2008, which dealt with the same problems of intra-religious and intercultural infighting in India, was the rise of Hindu attacks on Christians in Orissa. This renewed manifestation of protests has occurred in response to the June and July boycotts of Jammu-Kashmir by Hindu groups who were upset at the loss of a land grant which had been awarded to them under shady circumstances some months ago. The first occasion in August 2008 that I am referring to was the rise of youthful and sometimes violent protest once again in Srinagar, with the greatest call in years for Jammu-Kashmir to separate from India. Oh yeah, and then storyline happens and cliffhanger occurs. But it’s okaaaay, she’s super different from all the other Darling women he’s kidnapped before and soon enough Peter Pan joins in the fun for some orgy stuff. This book may contain material that is disturbing to some readers. for some side-quest reasons because although there’s a “don’t touch the Darlings” rule in place, touching the Darling appears to be the main quest for every Lost Boy within a quarter mile. Winnie Darling is a dead-inside and SUPER horny young woman. Here’s a simple synopsis for you: Peter Pan and the Lost Boys are a bunch of angry and SUPER horny young men. However, this had just enough story to make it compelling and so I actually finished it. I don’t know why, but I wasn’t expecting erotica when I picked it up. Beautifully written and narrated to perfection, this is some top-quality erotica here. ![]() ![]() The boat crosses, but before it lands, the opposite shore is again crowded with condemned souls. He almost comes across as arrogant, but it just allows you to love him all the more. Yes, this modest man, who has seen so much loss, clings to his capabilities which show his devotion and care. And something that I had somehow forgotten came through clearly, Felix's strength. Despair, pain, loss, utter love and awe are all heard, and felt. Finally, the melancholy tone that runs through the book is heard deep down in the vocal chords, but they don't cover up the endless, yet waning, hope that keeps you linked to each word. Not only am I told that his pulse is racing, but I can hear it in the narrators breath. Further into the story there is perfection when Felix's innocence and timidity need to come through. And most importantly he conveys the brilliance of the writing. He doesn't swoop and soar, but instead carries the audience along on the wings that this story is built upon. He has an airy, lofty cadence that imparts the feeling of lift and flight. First and foremost the quality of Matthew Lloyd Davies’ voice is ideal. A captain with the invading Coalition forces, he believes that self-sacrifice is the most heroic. Sergei Stolkov is a faithful officer, though his deepest desires go against the Doctrine.
